The sturdy and smart little Boston terrier was the first dog breed developed in the United States. It was descended from English bulldogs and terriers in the 1860s and 1870s as a sport fighter but proved instead to be so affable it became known as the “Boston gentleman.”

Steven Vassall, of Brooklyn, performed surgeries and other medical procedures on 14 animals, the indictment said.
