Non-Allergenic Dogs

February 11th, 2007 · 7 Comments

Someone on Craigslist asked the following question:

We recently adopted a dog with “fur”, sadly, to discover that I am allergic to the fur. My two children are missing him very much, and we are now looking for a young dog with “hair”, as I know for sure I am not allergic to that type of canine.

If anyone knows of one, or has one that needs a loving home with a large yard and deserves lots of love, please respond. Any help is appreciated!

Well, I didn’t do all of the research, I just typed Hypo Allergenic Dogs into a search engine and got About.com’s reply…

to paraphrase, there is no such thing as a non-allergenic dog. people with strong allergies can be affected even by hairless varieties.

With that said, this is a list of the top dogs for people who want to minimize their allergy suffering:

Hair-less Dog Breeds
Mexican Hairless
American Hairless Terrier
Chinese Crested Hairless
Peruvian Inca Orchid

Single-Coated Dog Breeds
Chinese Crested (Powder Puff)
Poodles (all sizes)
Schnauzers (all sizes)
Portuguese Water Dog
Bichon Frise
Soft-coated Wheaten Terrier
Coton de Tulear
Kerry Blue Terrier
West Highland White Terrier
Bedlington Terrier

The Bichon is not single coated. It has a double hair coat that requires brushing because it does not shed.

The terriers listed, while often considered good for allergy sufferers, need dog-savvy owners who are committed to training. They can be tough dogs — smart, stubborn and sometimes dog aggressive So please do your homework on the breeds. While the coat is a nice side benefit, it’s the temperament and attitude of the dog that’s equally, if not more important.

i have a bichon frise and its really hypo-allergenic, if you have allergies its the one for you. you can look it up on wiki, something about their double layer of hair that doesnt shed, helps with them being hypo-allergenic. My mother is allergic to dogs but when i brought this dog home she never felt a thing. their fun small dogs. super great with kids.

What about Yorkshire terriers? I have a friend who has two of these dogs. She is allergic to dogs, but not this breed.
