WASHINGTON—The story hasn’t come up yet in any of the Republican presidential debates and it hasn’t even dogged him on the campaign trail.

But it’s a true story and it comes with a Canadian angle: Mitt Romney once made the 12-hour drive from Boston to Grand Bend with the family dog strapped to the roof of his car.
