OK, so if you follow this link to a list of 75 restricted or banned breeds please be warned… the site is overly sensationalist and a bit over the top, but it makes a clear point. Dogs are being scrutinized in local governments across the country, so:
- Make sure you know all you can about the town dog laws before you move to a new location
- Try to get involved in your local community by going to town/city meetings to advocate for your dog’s rights. How much time it is worth to know you might be fighting to keep your dog.
If you own a home or plan to - it’s good to understand your rights with regards to insurance. Some companies ban certain dogs outright. Some allow exceptions for good behavior and require a yearly evaluation.
The Mass Federation of Dog Owners and the AKC (among others) are pushing for legislation to have restrictions waived for listed breeds if the dogs have passed and achieved certification through either the American Temperament Test Society (ATTS) or the AKC’s Canine Good Citizen (CGC).
This makes total sense to us here at DogBoston!

What makes you think this site is
” overly sensationalist and a bit over the top, “??

First of all, I respect the site and the owner’s right to put forth an entertaining website. As the owner of this site, I stay aware of the issues and attempt to research and make people aware of factual things that are happening. My biggest contribution is to make people aware of thought provoking news, dog-friendly training techniques, dog parks, and real issues that might concern dog owners all over - but focused on Boston area residents.
In regards to the dog breed ban, all I can say is to make sure your know your rights and take the time to get involved. So the article provoked, as was its intention.
So you asked me:
> What makes you think this site is
>”overly sensationalist and a bit over the top??”
Let’s see:
1. The choice of red color
2. Simple polls that raise the emotional “heat” of the site - asking people for quick opinions about very complex topics with complex backgrounds.
3. The article I’m referring to, starts by talking about “restricted OR banned breeds” but ends up really getting you to think your dog will be banned outright.
“Media Frenzy Equals Breed Bans”
“Just who or what is behind this breed ban frenzy?”
“I say it’s time to make the donuts. It’s time for dog lovers of every dog, every breed, shape or size to come together to stop this Dog Holocaust.”
5. Read the article written before this one “Are you funding the Dog Holocaust”
A Dog Holocaust - what?
This site is taking an extreme, sensationalist position.
Hey I love dogs just as much as anyone and I’ve taken the time to get our two dogs trained to a level where they could never possibly do any harm.
Also - anytime someone in the press compares people to Hitler or an event to the holocaust, they are taking a sensationalist position…
Comparing a discussion about dogs that have bitten innocent people and children, is ridiculous to compare with a race of people that were eliminated by a madman.
Another thing I don’t like about the site is how difficult it is to find “real” information about who runs the site. It could come from the Philippines for all I know (after all, 30% of their site traffic comes from the Philippines - which is extremely high and … weird). I think the owner of the site is not who they say they are, and are probably making money off of making bold statements.
That sound reasonable for my use of the words “overly sensationalist and a bit over the top” ?
