Here’s a link to the FDA’s summary of what the hell just happened with our pet food.
A quick summary:
1. Menu Foods recalls “Wet” cat and dog food
2. Rat poison claimed to be the problem, spreads to dry foods - wheat gluten is bad.
3. Rat poison was disproved, melamine (plastics chemical) could be culprit.
4. Many other types of foods contaminated (treats, biscuits, more). Hopefully everyone has checked their foods for the presence of wheat gluten and taken steps to see who the supplier is…
People are reacting in different ways, but this news has been tough for people who expect a little bit more out of the process of making sure our animal’s foods are just as safe as ours.
Whatever turns out to be the problem, it would be good to get back to trusting the food we buy in stores for our pets. I’m sure I’m not alone in taking a break from the typical foods we give our dogs and giving them something a little better until the dust settles a bit on this whole scenario.
