Update! AKC Backs Off Petland Deal

September 30th, 2006 · 1 Comment

Great news.

UPDATE - 09.28.2006

The AKC has responded to multitudes of well thought out letters from Parent Clubs, Member Clubs and huge number of individuals requesting the AKC to rescind their contract with Petland where the appearance of “AKC Approved Puppies” was thought very inappropriate and in conflict with their code of ethics. The following letter was posted to the Delegate’s List declaring that the AKC would not go further with the plan.

Claudia Frank, BCSA AKC Delegate

The BCSA Board would like to thank all of you that posted opinions. Since the issue is resolved, the Opinion Board is closed for posting; however, you can still view comments here.

At the September Delegates Meeting AKC reported that we had reached an agreement with Petland in order to facilitate the registration of dogs that are already AKC registerable.

AKC’s Board of Directors and management believed that this agreement would have helped to further the mission of the AKC. Promoting responsible dog ownership to new puppy owners, implementing our care and conditions policies, and exposing more dog owners to AKC educational programs and services would have had even greater reach.

In the past few weeks we have received many comments about this agreement, both positive and negative. We have listened to the concerns and because this issue has become so divisive, we believe it is in the best interest of our sport and the American Kennel Club not to go forward with this initiative.

The important thing here is that nothing has changed — the AKC will continue to register any dog that comes forward and will continue to derive a very large portion of its income from commercial breeders/puppy mills and petshops as they always have.

Apparently, this is not a problem for the breed clubs — this has not been closely held information, and the breed clubs have ignored the close relationship between commerial breeders/puppy mills and the AKC that now goes back longer than 50 years.

What the breed clubs resented was having this ugliness put in the front window for everyone to see, and having pet store dogs given parity with whatever it is the “mom and pop” breeders are selling.

In fact, in the mind of the AKC, they do have parity, and in many cases that may not be too far from fact.
